Profile of the MonthThomas B. Young
Thomas B. Young, a WWII navy veteran, proves you are never too old to take up a new form of exercise. “Even though I was not athletic and did not begin racewalking until age 83, it has been a lifesaver for me – both physically and mentally at age 91,” he said. Young was introduced to racewalking by his neighbor, Jean Brunnenkant, who also continues to compete in racewalking events in her 90s. Young hasn’t experienced any injuries from racewalking. He trains one to three miles daily. He belongs to the Heartland Racewalkers and finds their clinics beneficial. He competes in state and national 1,500 meter and 5K races and won medals at both levels. Young advised new racewalkers to “be yourself, set a few modest goals and participate.”
